Donetsk is the second largest city of Ukraine by its
size and population. It is the biggest industrial, scientific and cultural
center of the country. The 70% of Ukrainian Industry and business is located in
the city of Donetsk. The city was founded in the 1689 by English
technician-metallurgist J.J.Hughes who built the smithy that became the first
production line of future metallurgical plant. Donetsk was known as Hughsofka
till 1924 and Stalino till 1961. It was given the status of city in 1917 and
became the capital of the Donetsk region in 1932. Donetsk is a major
industrial, scientific and cultural centre with a population of 1132700 today.

The Donetsk National Medical University (DNMU) is one of the largest and best
medical university of Ukraine. It was founded in 1930 as the Satlino Medical
Institute. At present, over 920 teachers work at the 77 departments of the Donetsk National Medical University
(DNMU). Among them,150 professors and 243 Associate Professors,academic title
of doctors and candidate of medical sciences are respectively 117 and 449

Since 1973, the Donetsk
National Medical University (DNMU) has
been training medical personnel for countries of the Eastern Europe, China and
Mongolia, and since 1976 it has been training students from other countries of
Asia, Africa and Latin America. At present, there are about 2100 foreign
students in the Donetsk National
Medical University (DNMU) who
study at the Preparatory Department, Medical Faculty, Dental Faculty, Nursing
Faculty and in Pharmacy faculties, undergo postgraduate and clinical
post-graduate (residency) courses as well as professional probation at
departments of the University in dentistry, therapy, orthopaedics and
traumatology, oncology, urology, psychiatry, ophthalmology, surgery, obstetrics
and gynaecology, as well as other medical specialities.
